Monthly Gatherings

Overview

During the Fiddle Club season from October thru June, we get together on the 2nd Sunday each month. We hold three workshops: a Kids Session from 3 to 3:30 pm, a Teen Session from 3:30 to 4:15 pm, and a session for all ages from 4:30 to 6:15 pm. Members then socialize over a potluck dinner, before enjoying the 7:30 pm evening Ceilidh Coffeehouse.

Location

This all happens at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, 41 Second Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts, one block from the Lechmere T stop on the Green line, with ample street parking, and some parking at the nearby Courthouse lot.

Admission

$3 for either the afternoon or evening, or $5 for the whole day. Musician and Listener members free.

Who

All ages, all musicians, all instruments, all levels, listeners, and dancers are welcome

Kids Session

From 3 pm to 3:30 pm, kids ages 7-14, are invited to attend the Kids Session to learn tunes and play together. Any experience level is fine, except for the basic beginner; one should be able to play a scale. Any instrument is welcome, although historically, the majority are fiddles. Fiddler Ed Pearlman teaches a tune each time, by ear, and on sheet music. Parents are welcome.

Teen Session

From 3:30 pm to 4:15 pm, teens can work on a few special tunes and arrangements.

All Ages Session

From 4 pm to 6pm, everyone is invited to attend the all-age workshop, where Ed Pearlman leads us through a selection of new tunes each time, mostly on sheet music, and sometimes by ear. All instruments are welcome. The setting is informal, and the pace is typically "moderate."

Potluck Dinner

Fiddle club Members reward themselves for their hard work in the workshop, with a delicious potluck dinner from 6:30 pm until 7:30 pm. Usually, during this time, the "store" is open for members to purchase recordings and books.

Ceilidh Coffeehouse

At 7:30 pm, dine on coffeehouse refreshments, as you enjoy open mike performances of music from Scotland and Cape Breton by club members, and sometimes by surprise visitors. It's always followed by a hearty Scottish and Cape Breton jam session and dancing. The jamming usually lasts as late as 10 pm.

Special Gatherings

Our May gathering typically includes our Rally guests giving workshops. Our June gathering typically allows members to share and show off their own compositions of a Scottish vein.
